Spring Home Improvements
It’s looks like we have made it through the ice and snow of a cold RVA winter, but there’s even better news… Spring is right around the corner! Now is the time to start improving your home. While adding on is tempting, we think spring home improvements should start with what you’ve already got! Here’s a quick guide to some of the things to take a look at after the winter clears….
Siding
Look all over the outside of your home for damage, warping, swelling or discoloration – especially near gutters and drainage areas. If your gutters have not been properly draining, pooled water might be causing damage to your siding. When this happens, you need to address both the root of the problem and the symptoms! Fix your gutters and replace that siding.
Window Frames/Seals
Check for leakage and condensation around your window frames and seals. If there is leakage inside the panes of your glass, the window’s integrity has been compromised and it will need to be replaced.
Windows
Clean those windows! Use Windex or other store-bought cleaner, and apply with a clean, soft cloth. Be sure to wash those window screens too… we wrote a whole blog about how to do it, and why it’s important!
Leaky Pipes
Check the floors and walls around all water fixtures for discoloration/warping/sweating/swelling. If you don’t know how long it’s been since you have replaced the seals and tape on your pipe joints, then you should replace them ASAP… but we recommend you call a plumber and have a professional take care of it.
Attic
Head up to the attic the next time it rains and check for leaks that might have sprung up over the course of the winter. Obviously, if you find any, you’ll need some repairs. Also be sure to check for insect infestation and mold growth – nipping either in the bud now can save you a lot of time and money in the summer!
Basement
Basements are naturally a more humid part of the home by nature, but that doesn’t mean moisture is okay. Check for cracks and water damage throughout your basement, especially around the corners and walls, and install a dehumidifier/ventilation. Be sure to check for mold and bugs in here too!
